The Project MotorHouse Business Plan is currently being updated however the objectives remain unchanged
Project MotorHouse is a charity and a social enterprise and grew out of a local initiative to redevelop Ramsgate’s derelict West Cliff Hall and turn it into a multi-use venue. Not only will this give Ramsgate some much needed modern facilities, but rents from the venue will be used to subsidise Project MotorHouse’s youth work.
The building is set into the cliff overlooking the port and forms a vital part of the town’s infrastructure. It side walls support the main access road to the harbour and its roof supports the first 40 metres of the West Cliff Promenade. The site is owned by Thanet District Council. Previous administrations have tried to sell the building and, when that failed, they attempted to give it away to a local church. All have baulked at the site’s complexities and its restrictions.
The council is about to market the building again. We believe that once again, it is unlikely to attract commercial offers. Luckily, Project MotorHouse is waiting in the wings with some wonderful, imaginative designs by award winning architect Guy Hollaway that have been met with overwhelming support during our public consultations.
Project MotorHouse uses an organisational structure borrowed from film production companies ie. it has a lean structure and sub-contracts personnel as and when they are needed. This allows us to appoint the most suitable people for the job, be it for the building project or for our youth work.
We have started our second major Heritage Lottery funded Young Roots project which will involve 28 local youths working with some of the best creative professionals in East Kent, the Ramsgate Society, Historic England, Ramsgate’s Heritage Action Zone and Pie Factory Music. An Awards for All grant for a photographic project is allowing us to create more public art for a derelict site on Ramsgate seafront. We also raised money via the Big Give and are about to start a Youth Steering Committee and Youth Mentoring programme. For more information about our youth projects, please visit the ‘Youth’ section of this website.
